Embrace the Reality: Politics is personal,

Vote for alignment, not illusions!

I have written on this particular subject previously, but bear with me on this one, because it is important!

In the world of politics, the term "non-partisan" often appears on ballots for local races. These include school boards, the local Electric Associations, fire districts, and city councils. But are these races and candidates truly non-partisan? The answer is a resounding NO. This does not mean elected officials fail to serve their communities well. Party affiliation alone does not dictate competence. However, it does reveal tendencies and values that influence decisions.

Understanding a candidate's leanings matters. If you hold liberal views, you might prefer someone who shares them. The same applies to conservative perspectives. This is not complex; it is basic human nature. People vote for those who align with their beliefs.

Why Non-Partisan Labels Fall Short

Human beings do not transform into neutral robots upon winning a non-partisan seat. Every decision they make passes through their personal filter of beliefs, values, and worldview. This includes budget votes, curriculum choices, zoning decisions, and hiring personnel. You cannot disconnect a person's convictions like unplugging a toaster. Pretending otherwise is naive and absurd.

For example, a board member who favors small government and low taxes will resist excessive spending. In contrast, someone who supports progressive social policies will advocate for them. These are not mere differences in style. They represent deep philosophical conflicts. Labeling a race as non-partisan does nothing to eliminate them.

Terms like "non-partisan," "unaffiliated," or "independent" sound appealing. They suggest impartiality. Yet, in practice, they create a fantasy. Reality shows that everyone brings biases to the table. Ignoring this leads to misguided expectations.

Values in Action: A Candidate's Perspective

As a candidate for Montrose City Council, I will apply my values to every vote. I believe these values best serve our community. Voters choose candidates precisely because their principles resonate. This is true for any race.

Calling an election or organization non-partisan is disingenuous at best. At worst, it borders on fraud. It misleads voters into thinking ideology plays no role. But convictions shape outcomes, whether acknowledged or not.

Moving Forward with Eyes Open

When it comes to a “non-partisan” or , for that matter, ANY race, voters should look beyond labels. Research candidates' backgrounds, statements, and affiliations. Ask about their stances on key issues like taxes, education, and infrastructure. This approach ensures informed choices.

In Montrose and similar communities, local governance affects daily life. School boards influence education. DMEA impacts energy costs. Fire districts ensure safety. City councils shape growth. Knowing a leader's worldview helps predict their actions.

Ultimately, non-partisan races are a myth. Embrace the reality: Politics is personal, Vote for alignment, not illusions. By doing so, communities build stronger, more representative leadership.

Just one mans humble opinion.
