Montrose Prepared Response (MPR),
Strengthens Community Resilience

Montrose Prepared Response (MPR) helps local residents build independent living skills and sustainable lifestyles to handle emergencies or major disruptions. Organized by Bob Hogan and supported by Neighborhood Watch organizer Rex Swanson, MPR emphasizes practical, hands-on preparation for individuals and families across Montrose County.

Monthly Meetings

The most recent MPR meeting took place on March 28, 2026, at 9:30 a.m. at Montrose Christian Church, located at 2351 Sunnyside Road. The meeting included announcements, discussion of current events and potential local risks, and updates on ongoing projects.

The next meeting is scheduled for April 25, 2026.

Food Security Initiatives

Food security remains one of MPR’s top priorities. The Food Security Work Group recently packed 7,700 long-term emergency meals at Montrose Sharing Ministries Food Bank. These meals are twice sealed and can last 15 years or more. Home Depot and Murdoch’s generously donated the 50 storage buckets.

Another packing event for 7,000 to 8,000 additional meals is planned for late April, 2026.

Community members interested in volunteering can email mpremail@protonmail.com.

Long-Term Food Production in Colorado

While many people plan to start a garden after a crisis, few consider the 45 to 180 days needed for crops to mature. MPR encourages members to prepare raised bed gardens now. Colorado’s adobe soil, short growing season, high winds, and alkaline conditions make proper soil preparation essential.

Raised beds should be 12 to 18 inches deep and no wider than four feet for easy access. A reliable soil mix for Colorado conditions includes approximately 50 percent screened topsoil, 30 percent high-quality compost, and 20 percent coarse sand or pumice for drainage. Top-dress beds annually with one to two inches of compost.

Easy-to-grow, nutrient-dense crops recommended for local conditions include potatoes, winter squash, radishes, onions, peas, and leafy greens. These crops store well and tolerate challenging soil when properly amended.

Additional Preparedness Efforts

MPR continues monthly handheld radio practice with Baofeng radios in preparation for a larger radio exercise in May. The group is also developing water filtration and storage projects for upcoming assemblies. Self-defense firearms training is scheduled later in the year, with possible monthly dry practice sessions being considered.

The Outreach and Promotion Committee is actively working to increase participation from Generation Z and Millennials.

How to Get Involved

Bob Hogan and Rex Swanson invite all Montrose County residents to participate. Attend the next assembly, volunteer at a food packing event, or join radio practice. By taking small steps together, MPR is building a stronger, more resilient community.
