Disagreement is Not Betrayal

In today's polarized political climate, loyalty to a leader is often mistaken for unwavering agreement. The narrative that disagreeing with Donald Trump equates to "Betrayal" has grown tiresome and misleading. Political disagreements are a natural part of our Republic. Conflating dissent with disloyalty oversimplifies complex issues and undermines healthy discourse. Disagreement within Trump's base is not betrayal but a sign of a vibrant political process.

Disagreement is Not Disloyalty

No two individuals agree on every issue, even within the same political camp. Supporters of any leader, including Trump, can align with core principles while diverging on specific policies. For instance, a January 2026 Pew Research Center survey found that 73% of Republican voters approve of Trump’s job performance, yet only 56% support all or most of his policies and plans (Pew Research Center, 2026). This gap highlights that loyalty to a leader does not require blind agreement.

The Recent Incident

President Trump shared a video on his Truth Social account late on February 5, 2026, that included a brief, racist clip depicting former President Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama as apes in a jungle setting. The video, which promoted election conspiracy theories, portrayed Trump as the "King of the Jungle" and various Democrats as animals from Disney's The Lion King, including President Joe Biden as a primate eating a banana. The Obamas' faces were superimposed on dancing apes for about one second at the end, accompanied by music from the film.

This was very distasteful and quite frankly below the office. I am very tolerant of things that Trump does and have been a supporter in general throughout his presidency when it comes to policy, as many who read my writings know. However, I will always call him out when I believe he has crossed the line. This is one of those times.

Mr. President, you owe an apology to not only the Obamas, but to the American people. This was incredibly distasteful and has no place in our culture. It goes against everything “We the People” stand for, no matter which side of the aisle you stand on.

Just one man’s humble opinion.
