Montrose Democrats Are 100% Correct
by Tammy Jolley
There have been multiple articles in local newspapers, dozens of social media posts, and rampant rumors that the Montrose Republican Party is encouraging people to come out and show support for “their” candidates at local board meetings in Montrose. I can tell you that their accusations are absolutely correct.
It is not, and has not been, a secret that the Montrose Republican Party has been going after these board seats that have too long been overlooked by the conservative citizens of Montrose. We, along with other concerned citizens, have actively pursued finding candidates to run for these seats because we understand the power that comes with control of these boards. For too long, under the cover of “non-partisan,” Democrats have amassed tremendous power by taking control of the boards that control the everyday workings of our communities.
One of their complaints is that the Republican Party should stay out of it because these are non-partisan seats. I don’t think there are many people ignorant enough to believe that any public office is actually non-partisan. Where there is control, there is guaranteed to be politics involved. Montrose is overwhelmingly conservative, and we will not apologize for fighting to keep it that way.
The School Board controls what curriculum the students are taught, who the superintendent is, and how the school budget is spent. The City Council controls how taxpayer dollars in the City are spent and what causes the City will endorse. The County Commissioners determine the budget for the County and how that taxpayer money is spent. They also have a large say in what regulations will be put in place. Many of these decisions in the past have only been an extra financial burden on the hardworking taxpayers of the City and County. These are just a few of the many decisions made by these local boards.
So yes, we are standing behind the people who have stood up to fight for us. There are not a lot of people willing to be slandered daily on social media and in the local papers. People do not want the headache that comes with taking a stand for their fellow citizens. As a party, we applaud their sacrifice. These positions are very time-consuming, and many are not paid positions.
What many of you are probably not aware of is that the same people who have issues with “our” candidates are following our candidates to places where they volunteer, where they enjoy a meal, or go out for entertainment. They are taking pictures of them and posting them on social media. They are leaving notes of warning on their vehicles at public events. They are going door to door asking people if they have interest in trying to recall the newly elected City Council members. There is something very eerie and concerning about their form of activism.
The same people shouting to “protect our democracy” are the very ones who are, for the second time in as many years, seeking to recall officials elected by the members of our city and county. This is no longer a time to sit on the sidelines. There is too much at stake for our future—but more importantly, for the future of our kids and grandkids who are too young to stand up and fight for themselves.
We can all do something. Please become informed on local, state, and national issues, and take the time to vote this November.
Tammy Jolley,
Secretary, Montrose Republican Party
